Understanding the age calculation rule

Understand how Reflect calculates age and why it can differ around a birthday.

Written by Reflect Team

Reflect calculates age from the date of birth and the date being analyzed. This age is used in analyses by age range and in average and median age metrics.

How is age calculated?

Reflect counts the days since birth and converts them to years using a base of 365.25 days per year. The result is rounded to three decimal places, then only its whole-number part is used for the employee’s age.

This method can differ from the number of birthdays passed around the birthday itself. For example, for someone born on March 1, 1996, Reflect records their age as 29 on March 1, 2026, and 30 the next day. Someone close to a boundary may therefore appear in a different age range than in a calculation based on birthdays.

What should I check if results differ?

Compare the same date, population and filters. For average or median age, Reflect uses the ages of employees in the HR headcount at the end of the period. A missing date of birth prevents the age from being calculated and excludes the person from these metrics.

Check dates of birth in the source and correct them if necessary. An administrator can also review data quality to identify missing values.
